Considerable amount of embodied energy (EE) is consumed throughout the various stages ofconstructing a building. Embodied energy is spent in the process of extracting materials, transportation, manufacture, assembly, demolition and/or deconstruction. With the use of existing data, the EE and cost of a steel and reinforced concrete (RC) building was calculated. For production of materials, the EE values were based on, 35.5MJ/kg for steel, 36.4MJ/kg for reinforcements and 5.8MJ/kg for concrete. For transportation, the concrete mix was based on energy values of1.75MJ/km for sand and aggregate, as for steel, 1MJ/t/km. The assembly of the steel and RC structure consumed 1.8MJ/m2 and 3.0MJ/m2, as for demolition, the values were 81.7MJ/m2 for steel and a considerably higher value of 136.2 MJ/m2, for the RC structure. The materials transported to the construction site, were delivered from three different locations of 15, 50 and 70km respectively.
